Your Opinion

My Opinion

What makes you different

Calgary business man

I’m not like the others; that is, I do not answer to a political party, I answer to the voters.

I’m not asking people to vote for a political party.  I’m asking them to vote for their country.  I’m asking them to vote for Canada!

The Senate should be abolished

Lots of people

Abolish the Senate - not going to happen in your lifetime.

So in the meantime, let's make it useful by electing independent, free-thinking Albertans as Senators.

Electing party representatives just mirrors the House of Commons and gives us "rubber stamp" Senators.

Can new Senators be open minded...

... when looking at important issues or are they going to be merely an automatic extension of the thought process of the power groups that appointed them?"

This is the only question in this Senate election:

  • to elect a party representative who mirrors the House of Commons; or,

  • to elect an independent Albertan who represents those elected him or her ─ you!

I won't vote for an older person.

"I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

Congratulations!

Long time Conservative voter

Unexpected response when I was kicked out of the cacus for speaking up in the legislature.

Changes to the upper house can only be made through Constitutional change, which is almost impossible.

You may be waiting a long time my friend, although I applaud the effort!

Mother, Airdrie

I think the end result, a regional counter balance to the heavy concentration of central Canadian votes in the house of Commons, is worth the effort.

Alberta Oil to Asia

Obama & Congress have put politics over the economy.

Canada should expedite Gateway pipeline.

A perfect "Tom Clancy Cuban missile" scenario.

When push comes to shove, the United States will not stand by and watch oil from its back yard (Alberta) go to China.

The United States and China have been facing off in the Taiwan Strait with submarines and now aircraft carriers since 1949. Think about the meaning of the daily shelling of Quemoy and Matsu.

Realpolitik!

The elected senators are picked by the news media and not the voters.

If the news media does not recognize the independent candidates then the voters never will.

Irrespective of how good the platform if the voters never see it you can't win. If the news media ignores the independent candidates your platform never gets seen.

This is an old truism.

However, with the scope and reach of social media today, I am not sure it is the only difference maker.
